ไอยเรศมีลำต้นใหญ่แข็งแรงคล้ายกล้วยไม้ช้าง แต่ใบยาวกว่าและแคบกว่า ใบยาวประมาณ 40 เซนติเมตร กว้างประมาณ 4 เซนติเมตร มีทางสีเขียวแก่สลับกับสีเขียวอ่อนตามความยาวของใบคล้ายกล้วยไม้ช้าง ปลายใบมีลักษณะเป็นฟันแหลมไม่เท่ากัน ช่อดอกเป็นรูปทรงกระบอก โค้งห้อยลง ยาวประมาณ 30-50 เซนติเมตร ก้านช่อยาวประมาณ 7-10 เซนติเมตร มีดอกแน่นช่อ ในหนึ่งช่อมีดอกประมาณ 150 ดอก มากกว่ากล้วยไม้ช้าง รูปร่างลักษณะของช่อดอกที่ยาวเป็นรูปทรงกระบอกคล้ายกับลักษณะของพวงมาลัย จึงเรียกอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า “พวงมาลัย” ต้นใหญ่ๆ มักจะแตกหน่อที่โคนต้น เกิดเป็นกอใหญ่ขึ้นได้ ดอกขนาดมีขนาดประมาณ 1.2-1.5 เซนติเมตร สีพื้นของกลีบนอกและกลีบในของดอกเป็นสีขาว มีจุดสีม่วงประปราย เดือยดอกมีสีม่วงอ่อน แผ่นปากมีลักษณะโค้งขึ้นบนแล้วยื่นไปข้างหน้า มีแต้มสีม่วงตรงกลางแผ่นปากส่วนโคนและปลายสุดแผ่นปากเป็นสีขาว ปลายแผ่นปากเว้า เส้าเกสรเห็นชัด ออกดอกประมาณเดือนเมษายนถึงพฤษภาคม ดอกจะบานอยู่ได้ประมาณ 2 สัปดาห์ ไอยเรศที่มีดอกสีขาว ไม่มีสีม่วงปะปนอยู่เลย เรียก "ไอยเรศเผือก" ซึ่งหาได้ยาก
