ลOfficially established on 25th April 2002, the Environmental Health Institute (EHI) is a public health laboratory at the National Environment Agency (NEA). EHI conducts research, surveillance and evidence-based risk assessment on infectious diseases of environmental concerns. The key thrust of the centre is to acquire knowledge and to develop advance and cost effective tools and strategies to support public health operations and policies.
EHI's research areas include vector-borne diseases (e.g. dengue, chikungunya, malaria and hanta virus infection), food hygiene and other issues of environmental concern (e.g. indoor air quality, legionellosis and fungus infestation). Through studying the vector, virus, disease hosts; food pathogens and environmental factors, an amalgamated approach is taken to pursue new knowledge and technologies.
EHI's research programme is categorized into:
Vector-borne Disease
Environmental Hygiene
Food Hygiene
EHI has a team of experienced and highly motivated researchers comprising entomologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists and immunologists. The institute collaborates with various academic bodies, research institutes and organisations, and is constantly identifying working partners with relevant expertise. Working with other stakeholders, EHI strives to contribute to the continuous advancement of Singapore's public health.
