อุทยานแห่งชาติถ้ำผาไทมีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมในท้องที่อำเภอเมือง อำเภอแจ้ห่ม อำเภองาว จังหวัดลำปาง มีลักษณะภูมิประเทศทั่วไปเป็นภูเขาสูงสลับซับซ้อน สภาพป่าเป็นป่าเบญจพรรณและป่า เต็งรัง ซึ่งมีความอุดมสมบูรณ์มาก มีสวนสักกระจายอยู่ทั่วไป เป็นแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์จำนวนมาก พื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่เป็นพื้นที่ต้นน้ำลำธาร ชั้นที่ 160 มีจุดเด่นและสถานที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจที่สำคัญ คือ ถ้ำผาไท หล่มภูเขียว บริเวณอ่างเก็บน้ำเขื่อนกิ่วลม ถ้ำออกรู ห้วยแม่พลึง นอกจากนี้ยังมีน้ำตกขนาดเล็กกระจัดกระจายอยู่ทั่วไป และยังมีสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวขององค์การอุตสาหกรรมป่าไม้ คือ ศูนย์ฝึกลูกช้าง มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 758,750 ไร่ หรือ 1,214 ตารางกิโลเมตร

บริเวณปากถ้ำเป็นคูหากว้างซึ่งมีเสาหินขนาดใหญ่สูงหลายสิบเมตรตั้งตระหง่านเป็นเอกลักษณ์ บนผนังถ้ำด้านขวามือมีรอยจารึกพระปรมาภิธัยย่อ “ป.ป.ร.” ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 7 ทรงจารึกไว้เมื่อครั้งเสด็จประพาสถ้ำผาไทในปี พ.ศ. 2469 นอกจากนี้ยังมีทางแยกไปถ้ำโจรและถ้ำเสือที่มีหินงอกหินย้อยรูปทรงแปลกตาน่าชม
