โรงเรียนนครขอนแก่น ก่อตั้งขึ้นตามดำริของนายธานี บุญคุ้ม ศึกษาธิการจังหวัดขอนแก่นขณะนั้น โดยมีนายทำนอง รังสีปัญญา อาจารย์ใหญ่โรงเรียนฝางวิทยายน พร้อมด้วยกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน และ ชาวบ้านทุ่ม ได้บริจาคทรัพย์ส่วนตัวก่อสร้างอาคารเรียนชั่วคราวขึ้น โดยใช้พื้นที่สาธารณะของศูนย์พัฒนาเยาวชนบ้านทุ่ม ซึ่งตั้งอยู่บนถนนสายเอเชีย 14(ถนนมะลิวัลย์ , ขอนแก่น – ชุมแพ ) ห่างจากตัวจังหวัดด้านทิศตะวันตกประมาณ 15 กิโลเมตร วันที่ 20 พฤษภาคม 2524 นายทำนอง รังสีปัญญา ได้รับแต่งตั้งให้เป็นผู้บริหารคนแรก มีอาจารย์จำนวน 5 คน มีนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 จำนวน 400 คน ปี พ.ศ. 2525 ได้อนุญาตให้ใช้อาคารเรียนของโรงเรียนบ้านทุ่ม(ทุ่มประชานุเคราะห์)และวัดป่าอภัยวันเป็นสถานที่เรียนเพิ่มขึ้น และได้รับจัดสรรงบประมาณเป็นครั้งแรกเพื่อก่อสร้างอาคารเรียนชั่วคราว อาคารถาวร และปรับปรุง ถนน แหล่งน้ำ โดยมีครูเพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 30 คน นักเรียน 600 คน
