วัดหนองบัวเป็นวัดที่เก่าแก่ประจำหมู่บ้านหนองบัว ต. ป่าคา อ. ท่าวังผา จ. น่าน จากคำบอกเล่าไว้เดิมวัดหนองบัวตั้งอยู่ที่ริมหนองบัว (หนองน้ำประจำหมู่บ้าน) ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากที่ตั้งวัดปัจจุบันไปทางทิศตะวันตกประมาณ 500 เมตร ปัจจุบันไม่มีซากโบราณสถานเหลืออยู่เลย ต่อมาได้มีการย้ายวัดมาที่ปัจจุบันนี้ วัดหนองบัวสันนิษฐานว่า สร้างเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. 2405 โดยการนำของครูบาหลวงสุนันต๊ะร่วมกับชาวบ้านหนองบัวสร้างขึ้น จึงทำให้วิหารหนองบัวแห่งนี้ เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมไทยล้านนาที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งหาดูได้ยากมากในสมัยนี้ และพระวิหารหนองบัวแห่งนี้ยังมีจิตรกรรมฝาผนังแบบโบณาณที่สวยงามอีกด้วย
ประวัติวัดหนองบัวและประวัติจิตรกรรมไม่มีหลักฐานบันทึกไว้ การสืบประวัติจะต้องอาศัยข้อมูลจากสองทางด้วยกันคือ สืบจากคำบอกเล่าของผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่และสืบจากการสังเกตจากรายละเอียดที่แสดงไว้ในภาพเขียน
