ต้นกะเพรา เป็นไม้ล้มลุกซึ่งจัดอยู่ในวงศ์ LABIATAE (LAMIACEAE) สูงประมาณ 30-60 เซนติเมตร โคนต้นออกแข็ง กะเพราแดงจะมีลำต้นสีแดงอมเขียว กะเพราขาวมีลำต้นสีเขียวอมขาว และยอดอ่อนมีขนสีขาว มีใบเป็นใบเดี่ยวสีเขียวรูปรีออกตรงข้ามกัน ปลายใบมนหรือแหลม โคนใบแหลม ขอบใบเป็นจักฟันเลื่อยและเป็นคลื่น แผ่นใบมีขนสีขาว ส่วนดอกกะเพราจะออกเป็นช่อที่ปลายยอด มีดอกสีขาวแกมม่วงแดงมีจำนวนมาก กลีบเลี้ยงโคนจะเชื่อมติดกัน ปลาบเรียวแหลม ด้านนอกมีขน กลีบดอกแบ่งเป็น 2 ปาก ปากบน 4 แฉก และปากล่าง 1 แฉกและยาวกว่าปากบน มีขนประปราย เกสรตัวผู้มี 4 อัน ส่วนผลเป็นผลแห้ง เล็ก เมื่อแตกออกจะมีเมล็ดสีดำถึงน้ำตาลคล้ายรูปไข่
