และในวันที่ 12 กุมภาพันธ์ 2520 ได้จัดให้มีการชิงแชมป์ประเทศไทยขึ้น ณ สนามฮอกกี้ (สนามเทพหัสดินทร์ในปัจจุบัน) สนามกีฬาแห่งชาติ กีฬาเปตองเริ่มเผยแพร่ไปสู่ภาคอย่างกว้างขวางในราวปี พ.ศ. 2522 โดยเฉพาะทางภาคใต้ ทางสมาคมได้เชิญโค้ชเปตองชาวฝรั่งเศส นายโอเตลโล โตวาเตลลี มาช่วยสอนและเปิดอบรมตามจังหวัดต่างๆทางภาคใต้ ซึ่งก็ได้รับความสนใจมาก ถึงขนาดมีการจัดแข่งขันชิงแชมป์ภาคใต้ขึ้น ตอนนั้นก็มีการเริ่มเล่นกันมากในหมู่ข้าราชการ และในหน่วยงานเอกชนมีการตั้งชมรมเปตองตามจังหวัดต่างๆ

ในปัจจุบันได้แพร่หลายไปทั่วทุกภาค และกำลังได้รับความนิยมเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆอีกทั้งกีฬาเปตองได้แพร่หลายเข้าสู่ระบบการศึกษาของไทย อีกทั้งถูกเลือกให้เป็นกิจกรรมนันทนาการในสถานศึกษา นอกจากนั้นหน่วยงานต่างๆทั้งของรัฐและเอกชนได้พิจารณาเห็นว่ากิจกรรมเปตองเป็นกิจกรรมกีฬาและนันทนาการที่ส่งเสริมความสามัคคีและลดความเครียดจากภารกิจ หน้าที่การงานได้ดี
