เป็นโรงพยาบาลที่เก่าแก่แห่งหนึ่งในประเทศไทย ได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณจากสมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิรา บรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า พระบรมราชเทวี ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงพระราชทานกำเนิดโรงพยาบาล เมื่อวันที่ 10 กันยายน พุทธศักราช 2445 โรงพยาบาล หลังแรกก่อสร้างในทะเลตรงบริเวณหน้าชายหาดที่ประทับ เป็นเรือนไม้หลังคามุงจาก 5 หลัง ปลูกติดต่อเป็นหมู่เดียวกัน และโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมหมื่นวิวิธวรรณปรีชา ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งอธิบดีกรมพยาบาลในขณะนั้น เสด็จประกอบพิธีเปิดเมื่อวันที่ 10 กันยายน 2445 ซึ่งตรงกับวันคล้าย วันพระราชสมภพของพระองค์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จประพาสหัวเมืองชายทะเล ได้แวะเยี่ยมสมเด็จพระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า จึงได้พระราชทานนามโรงพยาบาลนี้ว่า “โรงพยาบาลสมเด็จ” เป็นสิริมงคลนับตั้งแต่นั้นมา
