เมื่อสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราชทรงทำยุทธหัตถีชนะสมเด็จหงสวาดีแห่งพม่า ก็ได้สร้างเจดีย์ขนาดใหญ่เพื่อแสดงความยิ่งใหญ่และชัยชนะ จึงเรียกว่าเจดีย์ชัยมงคล นอกจากนี้ยังสร้างในรูปแบบเหมือนกันที่จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรีที่เรียกว่าเจดีย์ภูเขาทองที่พระเจ้าหงสาวดีสร้างขึ้น
