ประวัติ

สุวรรณี สุคนธา เป็นนามปากกาของสุวรรณี สุคนธ์เที่ยง นักเขียนชาวไทย เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 1 มีนาคม 2475 จบการศึกษาศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาจิตรกรรม มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร เป็นครูสอนศิลปะที่โนงเรียนศิลปศึกษา ก่อนไปเป็นอาจารย์ประจำที่มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร

"จดหมายถึงปุก" (2508) เรื่องสั้นเรื่องแรกของเธอ ได้รับการตีพิมพ์ในสตรีสาร ใช้นามปากกาว่า "สุวรรณี" ต่อมา ประมูล อุณหธูป บรรณาธิการสยามรัฐสัปดาห์วิจารณ์ ได้ตั้งนามปากกาให้ใหม่ว่า "สุวรรณี สุคนธา" เมื่อได้ส่งเรื่องสั้นให้ตีพิมพ์ในสยามรัฐ โดยนวนิยายเรื่องแรกของเธอ "สายบ่หยุดเสน่ห์หาย" (2512) ได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดี

ผลงานที่ได้รับรางวัลวรรณกรรม เช่น เขาชื่อกานต์ ได้รับรางวัล ส.ป.อ.ใน พ.ศ. 2513, ด้วยปีกของรัก ได้รับรางวัลชมเชยสัปดาห์หนังสือแห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2516, พระจันทร์สีน้ำเงิน ได้รางวัลยอดเยี่ยมจากสัปดาห์หนังสือแห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2519 และ สร้อยแสงแดง ได้รางวัลหนังสือเยาวชนระดับชมเชยจากสัปดาห์หนังสือแห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2524 เป็นต้น นอกจากนี้ ผลงานของสุวรรณีตลอดจนเรื่องราวชีวิตของสุวรรณีเองยังได้รับการนำไปจัดทำเป็นละครโทรทัศน์และภาพยนตร์หลายเรื่อง เช่น พระจันทร์สีน้ำเงิน(โดยใช้ชื่อเรื่อง น้ำพุ) เขาชื่อกานต์ คนเริงเมือง ฯลฯ
ด้านครอบครัว สุวรรณีสมรสกับ ทวี นันทขว้าง มีบุตรสี่คน ต่อมาหย่าขาดจากสามีแล้วมาร่วมชีวิตกับนายศิริสวัสดิ์ พันธุมสุต
สุวรรณี สุคนธ์เที่ยง เสียชีวิตขณะไปจ่ายตลาด แล้วถูกวัยรุ่นทำร้ายถึงแก่ความตาย เพื่อชิงรถยนต์นำไปหาซื้อยาเสพติด เมื่อวันที่ 3 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2527
