พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของ การศึกษาเป็นอย่างมาก เพราะทรงถือว่า “การศึกษาเป็นกระบวนการพัฒนาชีวิตมนุษย์” ดังจะเห็นได้จากพระบรมราโชวาทที่พระราชทานแก่คณะครูและนักเรียน ณ ศาลาดุสิดาลัย เมื่อวันที่ ๒๗ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๔ และเมื่อวันที่ ๑๓ มิถุนายน พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๘ รวมทั้งที่พระราชทานในพิธีพระราชทานปริญญาบัตรของมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เมื่อวันที่ ๑๙ กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๙ มีความตามลำดับดังนี้

“…การศึกษาเป็นปัจจัยในการสร้างและพัฒนาความรู้ ความคิด ความประพฤติ และคุณธรรมของบุคคล…“

“…ปัจจัยที่สำคัญประการหนึ่งของทั้งชีวิตและส่วนรวม คือ การศึกษาซึ่งเป็นรากฐานส่งเสริมความเจริญมั่นคงเกือบทุกอย่างในบุคคล และประเทศชาติ…“

“…การศึกษาเป็นเครื่องมือที่สำคัญในการพัฒนาบุคคลให้มีคุณภาพ ให้เป็นทรัพยากรทางปัญญาที่มีค่าของชาติ…“
