สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ (2510 : 57 – 58) ทรงสันนิษฐานว่ารูปภาพเหล่านี้น่าจะเกิดจากตัวงิ้วและเกิดร่วมสมัยกับหนังสือสามก๊กที่นิยมอ่านกันแพร่หลาย ภาพจากเรื่องสามก๊กยังเป็นภาพที่คนจีนนิยมใช้ประดับบ้านและแพร่หลายมายังไทยด้วย เช่น ภาพประดับพระที่นั่งในพระราชวังบวรสถานมงคล ซึ่งเก็บรักษาไว้ที่พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ
