สาเหตุ
สาเหตุของการเกิดเยื่อหุ้มสมองอักเสบ สามารถแบ่งกลุ่มการติดเชื้อต่าง ได้ดังนี้
1. การติดเชื้อไวรัส (Viral meningitis) เป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดเยื่อหุ้มสมองอักเสบในเด็กได้บ่อยที่สุด เชื้อที่พบบ่อย ได้แก่ เชื้อคางทูม ECHO. Coxsackie, polio virus และ varicella zoster
2. การติดเชื้อแบคทีเรีย (bacteria meningitis) พบได้น้อยว่าสาเหตุที่เกิดจากเชื้อไวรัสแต่พบว่าอาการของโรคจะมีความรุนแรงมากกว่า เชื้อที่พบจะแตกต่างตามวัย
>ทารกแรกเกิดเชื้อที่พบบ่อยคือ gram negative bacilli และ streptococcus gr. B
>เด็กอายุต่ำกว่า 1 ปี พบเชื้อ H.influenzae type B (Hib), streptococcus pneumonia, E.coli และ salmonella
>เด็กอายุ 1-5 ปี เชื้อที่พบมากที่สุดคือ streptococcus pneumonia และ H. influenza
>และเด็กที่มีอายุมากกว่า 5 ปี เชื้อที่พบมากคือ streptococcus pneumonia, Neisseria meningitides และ salmonella เป็นต้น ซึ่งในปัจจุบัน H. influenza พบได้น้อยลง เนื่องจากการได้รับวัคซีน
