ประวัติวัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ

วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ หรือ ที่ชาวบ้านนิยมเรียกกันว่า “วัดดอยสุเทพ” นั้น เป็นวัดที่สำคัญแห่งหนึ่งของเชียงใหม่ มีฐานะเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นราชวรวิหาร ตั้งอยู่บนดอยสุเทพ (สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลประมาณ ๓,๐๕๑ ฟุต) เลขที่ ๑๒๔ บ้านดอยสุเทพ หมู่ที่ ๙ ตำบลสุเทพ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ มีที่ดินตั้งวัดเนื้อที่ ๓๖ ไร อยู่ในเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยสุเทพ - ปุย (ดูเพิ่มที่ อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยสุเทพ - ปุย) อนึ่ง วัดแห่งนี้สังกัดคณะสงฆ์มหานิกาย
ชื่อของดอยสุเทพ เดิมเรียกกันหลายชื่อ นอกจากที่กล่าวมาแล้วข้างต้น ยังมีชื่อ อุจฉุบรรพต ดอยอ้อยช้าง และดอยกาละ สาเหตุที่ได้ชื่อว่า “วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ” สันนิษฐานว่าเดิมมีฤาษีตนหนึ่งชื่อวาสุเทพหรือสุเทวฤาษี (เชื่อกันว่ามีตัวตนจริง เพราะเป็นผู้สร้างนครหริภุญชัยเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๑๒๐๔ : อ้างตาม ชินกาลมาลีปกรณ์) มาบำเพ็ญตบะอยู่บนเขาลูกนี้ คนทั้งหลายจึงเรียกชื่อภูเขาตามชื่อฤาษีตนนั้น
การเดินทางไปยังวัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ
จากตัวเมืองสามารถเดินทางโดยใช้เส้นทางผ่านหน้ามหาวิทยาลัยและสวนสัตว์เชียงใหม่ เดินทางตามถนนห้วยแก้ว ผ่านอนุสาวรีย์ครูบาศรีวิชัย ไปตามทางคดเคี้ยวขึ้นเขา ระหว่างทางจะมองเห็นตัวเมืองเชียงใหม่อยู่เบื้องล่าง ระยะทางจากเชิงดอยถึงวัดประมาณ 11 กิโลเมตร ใช้เวลาประมาณครึ่งชั่วโมง










ประวัติความเป็นมาของวัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ
สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๑๙๒๖ ในสมัยของพระญากือนามหาราชและได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมาในปี พ.ศ. ๒๐๑๐ โดยมีตำนานที่เล่าเกี่ยวกับวัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพไว้ว่า ในสมัยพระญากือนา กษัตริย์องค์ที่ ๖ แห่งราชวงศ์มังราย (ครองราชย์ พ . ศ . ๑๘๙๘ - ๑๙๒๘) ผู้ทรงมีความเลื่อมใสในพระพุทธศาสนามากได้โปรดให้สร้างพระเจดีย์บนดอยสุเทพ โดยทรงนิมนต์พระมหาสุมนเถระเจ้าจากเมืองสุโขทัยให้มาประกาศศาสนาที่เมือง เชียงใหม่ และในครั้งนั้น พระมหาสุมนเถระเจ้าได้นำเอาพระบรมธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้ามาด้วย พระญากือนาเกิดความเลื่อมใสมาก จึงโปรดให้มีพิธีสรงน้ำพระบรมธาตุเพื่อจะได้อัญเชิญไปบรรจุไว้ในสถูปเจดีย์ ของวัดบุปผาราม ในขณะที่กระทำพิธีสรงน้ำพระบรมธาตุอยู่นั้นเอง พระบรมธาตุได้แยกออกเป็นสองส่วน พระญากือนากับพระมหาสวามีสุมนะจึงได้พร้อมใจกันทำพิธีบรรจุพระบรมธาตุองค์ ใหม่ไว้ที่วัดสวนดอก ส่วนพระบรมธาตุองค์เดิมนำไปประดิษฐานไว้ที่ดอยสุเทพ โดยเริ่มจากการอัญเชิญผอบพระบรมสารีริกธาตุขึ้นสถิตเหนือเศวตคชาธารช้างมงคล แล้ว อธิษฐานเสี่ยงช้างพระที่นั่งปล่อยไป หากพระบรมธาตุประสงค์จะสถิตอยู่ ณ ที่ใด ก็ขอให้ช้างมงคลหยุด ณ ที่แห่งนั้น และในระหว่างทางที่ช้างมงคลเดินทางไป ก็ได้หยุดเดินถึงสามครั้งทำให้เกิดชื่อของดอยช้างนูนและดอยงาม ครั้งที่สามซึ่งถือเป็นครั้งสำคัญ เนื่องจากช้างมงคลได้ไต่เขาไปจนถึงยอดดอยวาสุเทพบรรพตแล้วร้องเสียงดังจน ก้องสะท้านไปทั่วภูเขา เมื่อเดินประทักษิณ ๓ รอบแล้วจึงคุกเข่าหมอบลง และทันทีที่อาราธนาพระบรมธาตุลงจากหลังแล้ว ช้างมงคลนั้นล้มลงตายในทันที ซึ่งหมายความว่าจะไม่ยอมเป็นพาหนะของผู้ใดอีก
เหตุการณ์ในครั้งนั้นปรากฏใน พงศาวดารโยนก ว่า “… พระเจ้านครเชียงใหม่ให้สร้างพระเจดีย์บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุองค์หนึ่งซึ่ง เสด็จมาใหม่ไว้ในวัดบุปผารามนั้น ส่วนพระบรมธาตุองค์เดิมซึ่งพระมหาสุมนะเถระนำมาจากเมืองสุโขทัยนั้น เมื่อจะแสวงหาที่อันสมควรสร้างพระสถูปเจดีย์จึงเชิญผอบพระบรมธาตุขึ้นสถิต เหนือพระคชาธาร อธิษฐานเสี่ยงช้างพระที่นั่งปล่อยไป ช้างทรงพระบรมธาตุนั้นก็บ่ายหน้าเดินออกประตูหัวเวียงไปขึ้นสู่ดอยอุจฉุบรรพต (ดอยสุเทพ) ไปถึงผาลาดก็หยุดรออยู่ครู่หนึ่ง ก็ขึ้นต่อไปจนถึงจอมเขาแล้วก็หยุดอยู่ ณ ที่นั้น พระเจ้านครพิงค์เชียงใหม่กับพระมหาสุมนะเถระจึงพร้อมใจกันสร้างพระเจดีย์ บรรจุพระบรมธาตุนั้นไว้ ณ จอมเขาที่นั้น ในปีชวด อัฐศก จุลศักราช ๗๔๘ พิศาขมาส เพ็ญวันพุธ จันทร์เสวยฤกษ์ ๑๖ เป็นฤกษ์สถาปนาพระเจดีย์ธาตุสุเทพอันปรากฏอยู่ ณ จอมเขาหลังเมืองเชียงใหม่สืบมาจนทุกวันนี้ ”
