เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2533 คณะรัฐมนตรีมีมติให้จัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์ ขั้นโดยให้กระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์เทคโนโลยี และสิ่งแวดล้อม พัฒนาโครงการ และรับผิดชอบงาน ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2534 ได้รับอนุมัติให้จัดโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์เป็นโครงการเฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯพระบรมราชินีนาถ พระชนมพรรษา 5 รอบ กำหนดกรอบงบประมาณโครงการ 650 ล้านบาท และเริ่มก่อสร้างอาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์ในปี พ.ศ. 2537 กระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2538 ได้มีพระราชกำหนดจัดตั้งองค์การพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์ (อพวช.) ประกาศใน ราชกิจจานุเบกษา เมื่อวันที่ 30 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2538 โดยพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์ เปิดให้เข้าชมอย่างเป็นทางการ ในวันที่ 8 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2543[2]

ปัจจุบันได้มีการพัฒนาแหล่งเรียนรู้วิทยาศาสตร์เพิ่มขึ้นอีกแห่งหนึ่งที่ จัตุรัสวิทยาศาสตร์ มีพื้นที่จัดแสดงนิทรรศการและกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ประมาณ 3,000 ตารางเมตร ตั้งอยู่ที่ชั้น 4-5 อาคารจตุรัสจามจุรี (อาคารศูนย์การค้าของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย) ซึ่งได้เปิดให้เข้าชมตั้งแต่เดือนมีนาคม พ.ศ. 2554 ที่ผ่านมา
