และจากการตื่นตัวในด้านวิกฤตการณ์สิ่งแวดล้อมนี่เอง จึงมีการประชุมใหญ่ที่กรุงสตอกโฮลม์ ระหว่างวันที่ 5 ? 16 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2515 โดยมีรัฐบาลของประเทศสวีเดนเป็นเจ้าภาพ เรียกการประชุมนี้ว่า "การประชุมสหประชาชาติเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมของมนุษย์" ( UN Conference on the Human Environment ) ผลจากการประชุมครั้งนั้นได้มีข้อตกลงร่วมกันหลายๆอย่าง อาทิ การจัดตั้งโครงการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งสหประชาชาติ ( United Nations Environment Programme ) ซึ่งมีสำนักงานใหญ่อยู่ที่ กรุงไนโรบี ประเทศเคนยา ประชาชาติทั่วโลกจึงกำหนดให้ วันที่ 5 มิถุนายน ของทุกปี เป็น วันแห่งการร่วมมือระหว่างชาติของทั่วโลกเกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อม

นอกจากนี้แล้ว รัฐบาลของประเทศต่างๆได้รับข้อตกลงจากการประชุมมาดำเนินการจัดตั้ง หน่วยงานด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมขึ้นในประเทศของตน รวมทั้งประเทศไทย รัฐบาลได้ตราพระราชบัญญัติส่งเสริม และรักษาสภาพสิ่งแวดล้อม พ.ศ. 2518 และก่อตั้งสำนักงานคณะกรรมการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติขึ้น
