เป็นเทือกเขากั้นเขตแดนระหว่างจังหวัดลำพูนที่อำเภอแม่ทาและจังหวัดลำปางที่อำเภอห้างฉัตรประกาศเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติเมื่อวันที่ 5 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2518 มีเนื้อที่ทั้งสิ้น 159,556 ไร่ มีอุโมงค์รถไฟยาวที่สุดในประเทศไทย เป็นระยะทาง 1,352 เมตร รถไฟใช้เวลาวิ่งผ่านประมาณ 5 นาที อุทยานแห่งนี้อยู่กึ่งกลางเส้นทางคมนาคมทางรถไฟ ระหว่างลำปาง-ลำพูน ดอยขุนตาลประกอบด้วย ป่าไม้หลายลักษณะ เช่น ป่าดงดิบ ป่าสน เป็นต้น มี 4 ยอดเขา จากเชิงดอยถึงยอดสูงสุดประมาณ 7 กม.
 การเดินทางขึ้นไปบนดอยขุนตาล ไปได้ 2 ทางคือ ทางรถไฟ ลงที่สถานีขุนตาลแล้วเดินเท้าไปที่ทำการ อีกประมาณ 900 เมตร เป็นทางที่สะดวกที่สุด หรืออีกเส้นทางหนึ่งคือทางรถยนต์โดยเลี้ยวขวาตรง หลักกม.ที่ 47 (เส้นทางสายลำปาง-ลำพูน) เข้าไปตามทางลูกรังอีก 18 กม. ซึ่งสภาพถนนไม่ดีนัก บางช่วงก็ชันมากจึงควรใช้รถสภาพดี
