ความเป็นมา

สุนัขพันธุ์ลาบราดอร์ รีทรีฟเวอร์นี้มีต้นกำเนิดในรัฐนิวฟาวด์แลนด์ประเทศแคนาดา โดยใช้ช่วยงานชาวประมงในการลากอวนเข้าฝั่ง ปีที่กำเนิดประมาณ ค.ศ. 1800 และต่อมาในช่วงต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 สุนัขต้นสายพันธุ์ลาบราดอร์ได้ถูกนำจากนิวฟาวด์แลนด์มาที่ประเทศอังกฤษ ซึ่งเป็นสุนัขที่มีสีดำ ขนสั้นทั้งสิ้น แต่ด้วยความที่มีการเก็บค่าภาษีสุนัขที่แพงมาก ประกอบกับกฏระเบียบที่เข้มงวดของอังกฤษทำให้การนำเข้าสุนัขพันธุ์นี้ไปยังอังกฤษต้องหยุดชะงักลง เมื่อความต้องการลดน้อยลงคนจึงเลิกเพาะ จนมีการพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ขึ้นมาใหม่โดยผสมข้ามสายพันธุ์กับสุนัขในกลุ่มรีทรีฟเวอร์ในปี ค.ศ. 1903 จะเห็นได้ว่าเดิมสุนัขพันธุ์นี้มีแต่สีดำ แต่หลังจากมีการพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ในภายหลังทำให้เกิดสีเหลืองตามมา ซึ่งก็เป็นที่ยอมรับกันโดยทั่วไปและถูกต้องตามมาตรฐานสายพันธุ์ หรือแม้จะเป็นสีช็อคก็ได้รับความนิยม ปัจจุบันสุนัขพันธุ์นี้นอกจากจะใช้งานในการล่าสัตว์แล้ว ยังใช้ในการตรวจค้นหายาเสพติด ระเบิด และช่วยนำทางให้กับผู้พิการทางสายตาอีกด้วย
