ต่อมาคณะรัฐมนตรีมีมติให้กำหนดเอาวันที่ 16 ธันวาคมของทุกปีเป็นวันกีฬาแห่งชาติ และให้การกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทยเป็นศูนย์กลางประสานงานองค์กรต่าง ๆ ทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชนจัดงาน "วันกีฬาแห่งชาติ" ขึ้นพร้อมกันทั่วประเทศเป็นประจำทุกปี
