ในปัจจุบันทางฝั่งสหภาพยุโรปจะมีการพัฒนาโรงกลั่นชีวภาพที่มีความก้าวหน้าอย่างมากเพราะมีความพร้อมทางด้านวิทยาการและทรัพยากรที่เพียงพอ แต่จีน ในฐานะผู้นาด้านการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพในเอเชียก็หันมาให้ความสาคัญกับการพัฒนาระบบโรงกลั่นชีวภาพเช่นกัน ถึงแม้ว่าความก้าวหน้าระบบโรงกลั่นในจีนจะยังไม่ทัดเทียม สหรัฐหรือยุโรป แต่ด้วยความที่จีนมีพื้นที่เพาะปลูกที่กว้างใหญ่ สามารถผลิตชีวมวลได้ล้นเหลือ ดังนั้นการที่จีนจะพัฒนาไปเป็นผู้นาด้านอุตสาหกรรมโรงกลั่นชีวภาพของโลกก็มีความเป็นไปได้สูงทีเดียว
