เป็นที่ยอมรับกันโดยทั่วไปว่า ประเทศไทยมีความจําเป็นต้องเกี่ยวข้องกับภาษาอังกฤษอย่าง หลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ เพราะในโลกสังคมปัจจุบัน การเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศ เช่น ภาษาอังกฤษ มี ความสําคัญและจําเป็นอย่างยิ่งในชีวิตประจําวัน เนื่องจากเป็นเครื่องมือสําคัญในการติดต่อสื่อสาร การศึกษา การแสวงหาความรู้ การประกอบอาชีพ การสร้างความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมและ วิสัยทัศน์ของชุมชนโลกและตระหนักถึงความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมและมุมมองของสังคมโลก นํามาซึ่งมิตรไมตรีและความร่วมมือกับประเทศต่างๆ ช่วยพัฒนาผู้เรียนให้มีความเข้าใจตนเองและผู้อื่น ดีขึ้น เรียนรู้และเข้าใจความแตกต่างของภาษาและวัฒนธรรม ขนบธรรมเนียม ประเพณี การคิด สังคม เศรษฐกิจ การเมือง รวมถึงการปกครอง รัฐบาลไทยได้ตระหนักและยอมรับในความสําคัญของภาษาอังกฤษเป็นอย่างดี จึงได้กําหนดให้วิชาภาษาอังกฤษเป็นวิชาหนึ่งในหลักสูตรแกนกลางการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน พุทธศักราช2551 ซึ่ง สถานศึกษาส่วนใหญ่มักจะจัดให้มีการเริ่มเรียนภาษาอังกฤษกันในระดับประถมศึกษาปีที่ 1 - 6 แต่เมื่อมีการทดสอบความสามารถ ด้านการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อการติดต่อสื่อสารกับชาวต่างชาติ กลับพบว่านักเรียนไทยส่วนใหญ่ยังไม่มี ความสามารถในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษได้อย่างถูกต้องและมีประสิทธิภาพ (อ้างถึงใน อาจิณวัชร ศักดิ์พิมานพร, 2532: 2)

ประเทศไทยได้ตระหนักถึงความสําคัญของการใช้ ภาษาอังกฤษมาโดยตลอด ดังจะเห็นได้จากการจัด การศึกษาของชาติได้กำหนดให้มีการเรียนการสอนวิชาภาษาอังกฤษทั้งทางด้านการฟัง การพูด การอ่าน และ การเขียน (อารีรักษ์ และ สิริพร, 2553) โดยเฉพาะ หลักสูตรแกนกลางการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐานได้กำหนดให้มีการเรียนตั้งแต่ระดับชั้นประถมศึกษาจนถึงมัธยมศึกษา (อรพรรณ, 2554) แต่กระนั้นการเรียนการสอน ภาษาอังกฤษก็มีปัญหามาโดยตลอด ส่งผลให้นักเรียน ไม่สามารถใช้ภาษาอังกฤษได้อย่าง ถูกต้อง (บุบผา, 2555) จนกระทังเข้าสู่การเรียนภาษาอังกฤษใน ระดับอุดมศึกษา ก็เกิดปัญหา เนื่องจากความสามารถใน การใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษาอยู่ในเกณฑ์ตํ่ากว่า มาตรฐาน (Prapphal, 2001)
ปัญหาและอุปสรรคในการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยอีสเทิร์นเอเชียค่อนข้างจะมีมากพอสมควร ซึ่งอาจจะมาจากหลายๆปัจจัย เช่น ภูมิหลังในการเรียนของนักศึกษาแต่ละคน รายงานวิจัยดังกล่าวจะช่วยให้ทราบถึงปัญหาและอุปสรรคในการเรียน รวมไปถึงปัญหาที่แท้จริงในการเรียนอังกฤษ ว่าปัญหาและอุปสรรคใดมีความสำคัญมากน้อยเพียงใด
ด้วยเหตุนี้ผู้วิจัยจึงเล็งเห็นความสำคัญเกี่ยวกับปัญหาและอุปสรรคในการเรียนของนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยอีสเทิร์นเอเชียจึงได้จัดทำการวิจัยเรื่องนี้ขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการแก้ไขข้อบกพร่องต่างๆในการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ
