เทศบาลในประเทศไทยปัจจุบันแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภทตามจำนวนประชากรและรายได้ของเทศบาลนั้น ๆ ในพระราชบัญญัติเทศบาล พุทธศักราช2496 ของกฏหมายได้กำหนดขนาดเทศบาลดังนี้
