จากหลักฐานที่กล่าวมาพอจะสันนิษฐานได้ว่า วัดวังสร้างมาก่อน พ.ศ. 2359 และอาจจะสร้างมาแล้วตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ 1 ก็ได้ จุดประสงค์ของการสร้างวัดนี้อาจเป็นได้ว่าเพื่อใช้เป็นวัดประจำเมือง หรือประจำตระกูล เพราะสมัยนั้นได้ย้ายเมืองพัทลุงมาตั้งที่โคกลุง บริเวณนี้ยังไม่มีวัดที่ใช้ประกอบพิธีทางศาสนา เมื่อสร้างวัดวังขึ้นแล้วก็พิจารณาเห็นว่า วัดควนมะพร้าว ซึ่งใช้เป็นสถานที่ประกอบพิธีถือน้ำพระพิพัฒน์สัตยามาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงธนบุรีนั้นอยู่ห่างไกลจากตัวเมืองมากเกินไป จึงได้พิจารณายกวัดวังขึ้นเป็นวัดถือน้ำพระพิพัฒน์สัตยา ดังปรากฏในพงศาวดารเมืองพัทลุงว่า พระยาพัทลุง (ทับ) ได้ปฏิสังขรณ์วัดวังซึ่งเป็นวัดของพระยาพัทลุง(ทองขาว) ขึ้นเป็นวัดถือน้ำไว้กลางเมืองพัทลุง ให้มีการฉลองเมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี ขึ้น 14 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ปีวอก โทศก พ.ศ. 2403
ต่อมาวัดวังได้รับการบูรณะเรื่อยมา จนกระทั่งทางราชการได้ยกเลิกพิธีถือน้ำพระพิพัฒน์สัตยาและได้มีการย้ายเมืองพัทลุงจากตำบลลำปำไปตั้งที่ตำบลคูหาสวรรค์ คือที่ตั้งเมืองพัทลุงปัจจุบัน เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2469 วัดวังก็เริ่มทรุดโทรมลงเรื่อย ๆ จนราว พ.ศ. 2512 ทางราชการจึงได้ทำการบูรณะซ่อมแซมวัดวังใหัมั่นคงถาวรจนกระทั่งทุกวันนี้
ความสำคัญต่อชุมชน

ในปัจจุบันวัดวังยังคงเป็นวัดสำคัญที่ใช้ประกอบพิธีกรรมทางพุทธศาสนาในวาระต่าง ๆ เป็นแหล่งรวมของศิลปกรรมที่งดงาม ที่กรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนไว้ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2528 และประกาศเขตโบราณสถานอีกด้วย

วัดวัง มีพื้นที่เป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส กว้างยาวประมาณ 3 เส้น 12 วา คิดเป็นพื้นที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 13 ไร่ 46 ตารางวา มีรูปแบบของศิลปกรรมที่ปรากฏ ดังนี้
