สาระเบื้องต้นเกี่ยวกับการวัดและประเมินผลการเรียนรู้ของผู้เรียน เช่นความหมาย ความสำคัญ ประเภท และลักษณะของการวัดและประเมินผลทางการศึกษา มีดังนี้

ยังมีความเข้าใจคลาดเคลื่อนเกี่ยวกับ การวัด และ การวัดผล บางคนเข้าใจว่า 2 คำนี้เป็นคำเดียวกัน มีความหมายเหมือนกัน เพราะมาจากภาษาอังกฤษคำเดียวกันคือ measurement แต่ในภาษาไทย 2 คำนี้มีความหมายแตกต่างกันเล็กน้อย ดังนี้
