ประวัติที่มา ระบำศรีวิชัย เป็นระบำชุดที่ ๒ ในระบำโบราณคดี อยู่ในระหว่างพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๓ – ๑๘ มีอาณาเขตตั้งแต่ภาคใต้ลงไปจนถึงดินแดนของประเทศมาเลเซีย และอินโดนีเซียยางส่วนปัจจุบัน ระบำศรีวิชัยเกิดขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๙ ตนกู อับดุล รามานห์ อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรีมาเลเซีย ได้แต่งเรื่อง Raja Bersiyong ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องราสเกี่ยวกับอาณาจักรศรีวิชัย และได้เชิญคณะนาฏศิลป์ไทย ไปแสดงประกอบภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ กรมศิลปากรได้จัดการแสดง ๒ ชุด คือ รำชัดชาตรี และระบำศรีวิชัย โดยระบำศรีวิชัยนี้มอบให้ นางลมุล ยมะคุปต์ ผู้เชี่ยวชาญการสอนนาฏศิลป์ไทย วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลป กรมศิลปากร และนางเฉลย ศุขะวณิช ผู้เชี่ยวชาญการสอนนาฏศิลป์ไทย วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลป กรมศิลปากร ศิลปินแห่งชาติ สาขาศิลปะการแสดง (นาฏศิลป์) ปีพุทธศักราช ๒๕๓๐ เป็นผู้ประดิษฐ์ท่ารำ นายมนตรี ตราโมท ผู้เชี่ยวชาญดุริยางค์ไทย กรมศิลปากร ศิลปินแห่งชาติ สาขาศิลปะการแสดง

       ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ.๒๕๑๐ ได้มีการปรับปรุงระบำศรีวิชัยใหม่ทั้งกระบวนท่ารำและทำนองเพลงบางตอน เพื่อให้เข้ากับระบำโบราณคดีอีก ๔ ชุด สำหรับนำออกแสดงให้ประชาชนชมในงานดนตรีมหกรรม ณ สังคีตศาลา เมื่อวันที่ ๑๒ มีนาคม พ.ศ.๒๕๑๐ และได้แสดงถวายพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทอดพระเนตรในงานเสด็จพระราชดำเนินทางเปิดการแสดงศิลปะโบราณวัตถุในอาคารสร้างใหม่ในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร เมื่อวันที่ ๒๕ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.๒๕๑๐ โดยมีนายสนิท ดิษฐพันธ์ ออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกาย นางชนานันท์ ช่างเรียน สร้างเครื่องแต่งกาย นายชิต แก้วดวงใหญ่ สร้างศิราภรณ์ และเครื่องประดั
