พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงเริ่มทดลองปลูกต้นยางด้วยพระองค์เอง โดยทรงเพาะเมล็ดยางในกระถางบนพระตำหนักเปี่ยมสุข พระราชวังไกลกังวล และได้ทรงปลูกต้นยางนั้นในแปลงป่าไม้ทดลองในบริเวณแปลงทดลองปลูกต้นยางนาพร้อมข้าราชบริพาร เมื่อวันที่ 28 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2504 จำนวน 1,250 ต้น ต่อมาทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้นำพันธุ์ไม้ต่างๆ ทั่วประเทศมาปลูกในบริเวณที่ประทับสวนจิตรลดาในลักษณะป่าไม้สาธิต นอกจากนี้ยังได้สร้างพระตำหนักเรือนต้นในบริเวณป่าไม้สาธิตนั้นเพื่อทรงศึกษาธรรมชาติวิทยาของป่าไม้ด้วยพระองค์เองอย่างใกล้ชิดและลึกซึ้งในปี พ.ศ. 2508
