ส่วนนามสกุล “ติณสูลานนท์” นั้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ พระราชทานให้ เมื่อ ๑๔ มิถุนายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๒

พลเอก เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ ได้รับการศึกษาโดยสรุปดังนี้

พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๔ สำเร็จการศึกษาตามหลักสูตรพิเศษของโรงเรียนเท็ฆนิคทหารบก (จปร) นักเรียนนายร้อยรุ่นนี้รับการศึกษาไม่ครบ ๕ ปี ตามหลักสูตรที่กำหนดไว้ คือต้องใช้เวลาการศึกษาเพียง ๓ ปี เท่านั้น เพราะต้องออกมาเป็นผู้บังคับหมวดตั้งแต่มีสภาพเป็นนักเรียนนายร้อย

ประวัติการรับราชการ
๓ มกราคม ๒๔๘๔ เป็นผู้บังคับหมวดประจำกรมรถรบ ทั้ง ๆ ที่ยังเรียนไม่จบหลักสูตร เนื่องจากเกิดกรณีพิพาทในอินโดจีนระหว่างรัฐบาลไทยกับรัฐบาลฝรั่งเศส นับเป็นการเข้าสู่สงครามครั้งแรก
๒๐ มกราคม ๒๔๘๔ ได้รับแต่งตั้งให้เป็น ว่าที่ร้อยตรี เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ แต่ไม่ได้เข้าพิธีพระราชทานกระบี่จากพระหัตถ์ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เนื่องจากต้องไปประจำการอยู่ที่สนามรบปอยเปต ประเทศเขมร (รับกระบี่ในสนามรบ)
มกราคม ๒๔๘๕ - ๒๔๘๘ ได้รับแต่งตั้งให้ไปสงครามอีกครั้งหนึ่ง นับเป็นครั้งที่ ๒ (สงครามมหาเอเซียบูรพา) เป็นผู้หมวดตอนแรก เป็นกองหนุนของกองทัพคือกองทัพพายัพ ซึ่งมีหลวงเสรีเริงฤทธิ์เป็นแม่ทัพ กองบัญชาการอยู่ที่ลำปาง ต่อมากองทัพเคลื่อนย้ายไปอยู่เชียงราย และได้รับคำสั่งให้ไปขึ้นอยู่กับกองพล ๓ ที่เชียงตุง จนได้เลื่อนยศเป็นร้อยเอก และได้รับคำสั่งให้เป็นผู้บังคับกองร้อยที่ลพบุรี
