จากความรู้เก่าที่เราทราบว่าสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อธุรกิจนั้นแบ่งออกเป็น 2 กลุ่มใหญ่ๆ คือ สิ่งแวดล้อมภายนอก และ สิ่งแวดล้อมภายใน ซึ่งแตกต่างกันคือ สิ่งแวดล้อมภายนอกนั้นคือปัจจัยซึ่งส่งผลกระทบต่อบริษัทหรือธุรกิจของเราโดยที่เรามิอาจควบคุมได้ ส่วนสิ่งแวดล้อมภายในนั้นคือปัจจัยที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อธุรกิจหรือบริษัทของเราเช่นกันแต่เป็นปัจจัยที่เราสามารถควบคุมได้ และเมื่อเราจะวิเคราะห์สิ่งที่เราควบคุมได้และไม่ได้นั้น เราทุกคนย่อมรู้ดีว่าเหรียญนั้นมีสองด้าน ทุกสิ่งอย่างมีทั้งด้านดีและด้านเสียของตัวเองเสมอ จึงทำให้เราได้รูปแบบของการวิเคราะห์ SWOT ดังรูป
