ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.สาโรช บัวศรี เป็นผู้ริเริ่มความคิด ในการนำหลักพุทธรรมมาใช้ในกระบวนการแก้ปัญหา โดยประยุกต์หลักอริยสัจ 4 อันได้แก่ ทุกข์ สมุทัย นิโรธ มรรค มาใช้ควบคู่กับ “ กิจในอริยสัจ 4” อันประกอบด้วย ปริญญา ( การกำหนดรู้ ) ปหานะ (การละ ) สัจฉิกิริยา ( การทำให้แจ้ง ) และภาวนา ( การเจริญ หรือลงมือปฏิบัติ ) จากหลักการทั้งสอง ศาสตราจารย์ ดร. สาโรช บัวศรี ได้เสนอแนะกระบวนการแก้ปัญหาในการเรียนการสอน ซึ่งมี 4 ขั้นตอน ดังนี้
1. ขั้นกำหนดปัญหา ( ขั้นทุกข์ ) คือการระบุปัญหาที่ต้องการแก้ไข
2. ขั้นตั้งสมมติฐาน ( ขั้นสมุทัย ) คือ การวิเคราะห์หาสาเหตุของปัญหาและตั้งสมมุติฐาน
3. ขั้นทดลอง และ เก็บข้อมูล ( ขั้นนิโรธ ) คือ การกำหนดวัตถุประสงค์และวิธีการ
ทดลองเพื่อพิสูจน์สมมุติฐาน และเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล
4. ขั้นวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลและสรุปผล ( ขั้นมรรค ) คือ การนำข้อมูลมาวิเคราะห์และสรุป
