ปัจจุบันเวียดนามแบ่งลักษณะของการจัดการศึกษาไว้ 5 ลักษณะ คือ
1. การศึกษาระดับก่อนประถมศึกษา
ประกอบด้วยการเลี้ยงดูเด็ก สำหรับเด็กอายุ 6 เดือนถึง 3 ปี และอนุบาลสำหรับเด็กอายุ 3-5 ปี
2. การศึกษาสามัญ (5 - 4 – 3)

การศึกษาสามัญ 12 ปี ของเวียดนามนั้นเวียดนามมีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะ ให้ประชาชนได้มีวิญญาณในความเป็นสังคมนิยม มีเอกลักษณ์ประจำชาติ และมีความสามารถในด้านอาชีพ

ในอดีตการศึกษาสามัญของเวียดนามมีเพียง 10 ปีเท่านั้น และไม่มีอนุบาลศึกษามาก่อนจนถึงปีการศึกษา 2532 - 2533 จึงมีการศึกษาถึงชั้นปีที่ 9 ทั้งประเทศ ซึ่งได้เรียกการศึกษาสามัญ 9 ปี ดังกล่าวนี้ว่าการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน และเมื่อได้ขยายไปถึงปีที่ 12 แล้วจึงได้เรียกการศึกษาสามัญ 3 ปีสุดท้ายว่า มัธยมชั้นสูงปี 2535-2536 ระบบการศึกษาสามัญในเวียดนามจึงกลายเป็นระบบ 12 ชั้นเรียนทั้งประเทศ โดยเด็กที่เข้าเรียนในชั้นปีที่ 1 จะมีอายุย่างเข้าปีที่ 6
