ประวัติความเป็นมา
ประชากรอพยพมาจากประเทศพม่า เข้ามาอยู่ในบริเวณพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์เมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. 2330 จากนั้นอพยพมาตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ในพื้นที่บ้านอ่างกาน้อยและบ้านผาหมอนเป็นหลัก การอพยพย้ายถิ่นไปมาในบริเวณนั้น เนื่องจากความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับภัยพิบัติและโรคระบาดที่เกิดขึ้น จึงได้มีการขยายหมู่บ้านจากบ้านอ่างกาน้อยไปยังบ้านแม่กลางหลวง และจากบ้านผาหมอนไปยังบ้านหนองหล่ม ดังเช่นปัจจุบัน
บริเวณลุ่มน้ำแม่กลาง หรือเรียกตามภาษาถิ่นว่า “แม่กลางคี” มีชนเผ่ากระเหรี่ยงอาศัย ซึ่งล้วนเป็นกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์กระเหรี่ยงในกลุ่มสะกอ หรือยางขาวในภาษาราชการ หรือที่รู้จักในชื่อ ปกาเกอะญอ หรือ คานยอ (Kanyaw) อันหมายถึง ผู้มีความสมถะและเรียบง่าย บริเวณลุ่มแม่น้ำแม่กลางประกอบด้วยชุมชนย่อย 4 แห่ง คือ ชุมชนบ้านอ่างกาน้อย ชุมชนบ้านแม่กลางหลวง ชุมชนบ้านหนองหล่ม และชุมชนบ้านผาหมอน โดยมีจำนวนครัวเรือนในแต่ละกลุ่มบ้านประมาณ 60 - 80 ครัวเรือน ถือว่าเป็นชุมชนขนาดเล็ก
นอกจากชาวกระเหรี่ยง 4 ชุมชน ที่อยู่อาศัยในบริเวณลุ่มน้ำแม่กลางแล้ว ยังมีชุมชนกระเหรี่ยงบ้านสบหาด ซึ่งเป็นหย่อมบ้านหนึ่งที่รวมอยู่ในลุ่มน้ำแห่งนี้ แต่อย่างไรก็ตามบ้านสบหาดเป็นหมู่บ้านเดียวที่ไม่ได้มีประวัติศาสตร์การตั้งถิ่นฐานร่วมกับหมู่บ้านใหญ่ เนื่องจากเป็นชุมชนใหม่ที่ชาวบ้านอพยพมาจากบ้านหนองแดง อำเภอแม่สะเรียง จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน
