ชายคนหนึ่งเป็นคนขี้เหนียว เขามักจะเอาสมบัติฝังดิน ไว้รอบๆ บ้านไม่ยอมนำมาใช้จ่ายให้เกิดประโยชน์

ต่อมาเขากลัวว่าจะไม่ปลอดภัยถ้าฝังเงินทอง ไว้หลาย เเห่ง เขาจึงขายสมบัติทั้งหมดเเล้วซื้อทองคำเเท่งหนึ่ง มาฝังไว้ที่หลังบ้าน เเล้วหมั่นไปดูทุกวัน

คนใช้ผู้หนึ่งสงสัยจึงเเอบตามไปดูที่หลังบ้าน เเล้วก็ขุด เอาทองเเท่งไปเสีย

ชายขี้เหนียวมาพบหลุมที่ว่างเปล่าในวันต่อมาก็เสียใจ ร้องห่มร้องไห้ไปบอกเพื่อนบ้านคนหนึ่ง

เพื่อนบ้านจึงเเนะนำประชดประชันว่า

"ท่านก็เอาก้อนอิฐใส่ในหลุมเเล้วคิดว่าเป็นทองคำสิ เพราะถึงอย่างไรท่านก็ไม่เอาเอามาใช้อยู่เเล้ว"

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า "ของมีค่า ถ้าไม่นำมาทำให้เกิดประโยชน์ก็ย่อมเป็นของไร้ค่า
