การประเมินการรู้เรื่องคณิตศาสตร์เป็นส่วนหนึ่งในสามด้านของการประเมินผลในโครงการประเมินผลนักเรียนร่วมกับนานาชาติ หรือ PISA ซึ่งเป็นการนำความรู้ทางคณิตศาสตร์มาประยุกต์ใช้กับสถานการณ์จริงในบริบทต่างๆที่หลากหลาย โดยต้องอาศัยทักษะและกระบวนการคิดให้เป็นคณิตศาสตร์เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งคำตอบที่สมเหตุสมผล อย่างไรก็ตาม ผลคะแนนสอบ PISA ของนักเรียนไทยยังมีคะแนนรวมที่ต่ำกว่าค่าเฉลี่ยจาก 65 ประเทศ ซึ่งส่วนหนึ่งอาจเป็นผลมาจากนักเรียนยังขาดทักษะและกระบวนการคิดให้เป็นคณิตศาสตร์ ดังนั้น ในบทความนี้ คณะผู้เขียนจึงมุ่งศึกษาเนื้อหาที่เกี่ยวข้องและนำเสนอประเด็นสำคัญต่างๆของทักษะกระบวนการคิดให้เป็นคณิตศาสตร์ (Mathematising Process) ในการทำข้อสอบ PISA และแนวทางส่วนหนึ่งที่คาดว่าจะช่วยให้ครูผู้สอนสามารถนำไปใช้ในการจัดการเรียนการสอนเพื่อพัฒนาทักษะกระบวนการคิดให้เป็นคณิตศาสตร์ของนักเรียนได้
