Small talk คือ การพูดเล่นเพื่อชวนคุ

Small talk คือ การพูดเล่นเพื่อชวนคุย ในภาษาอังกฤษนั้นเป็นมารยาทในการเข้าสังคมแบบหนึ่ง ที่สามารถทำให้มิตรภาพกับเพื่อนใหม่เกิดขึ้นได้รวดเร็วขึ้น

เมื่อไรจึงควร ‘ชวนคุย’

ขณะที่เรายืนอยู่คนเดียวกับคนที่ไม่สนิท แทนที่จะปล่อยให้บรรยากาศเงียบจนเกร็ง วางตัวกันไม่ถูก เราสามารถเริ่มพูดคุยในเรื่องทั่วไป เช่น ลม ฟ้า อากาศ เฟอร์นิเจอร์ในห้อง เช่น
 “Beautiful day, isn’t it?”
“ Pretty nice place, huh?”
“I love your dress. Can I ask where you got it?”

อย่างไรก็ดี การพูดเล่นในภาษาอังกฤษนั้น มีข้อจำกัดอยู่บ้างดังนี้ค่ะ

1.อย่าเอาแต่ยิ้ม
ที่งานเลิ้ยง
Man: Hi there. Why aren't you dancing?
           “ทำไมไม่เต้นรำล่ะครับ”
Woman: ยิ้ม  ไม่ตอบ
Man:       ?????

ข้อผิดพลาด:  การนิ่งเงียบ ไม่ว่าจะเกิดจากการอาย หรืองง  ถือว่าเป็นการเสียมารยาททั้งสิ้นค่ะ แม้ว่าทางฝ่ายหญิงจะไม่เคยรู้จักฝ่ายชายมาก่อน  การเงียบไปเฉยๆเป็นการแสดงออกมาทางภาษาอังกฤษว่า “ฉันไม่ต้องการคุยกับคุณ”

2.ไม่ควรคุยเล่นกันเรื่องเงินเดือน
ที่สนามบิน

3.ไม่ควรคุยเล่นเรื่องการเมือง

4.หลีกเลี่ยงการคุยเล่นเรื่องรูปร่าง แม้ว่าจะเป็นการชมก็ตาม

ข้อผิดพลาด: คุณสามารถชมเสื้อผ้า ทรงผมได้ค่ะ แต่ไม่ควรตีสนิท โดยการพูดเรื่องรูปร่าง ทรวดทรง เพราะทำให้คู่สนทนารู้สึกอึดอัดใจค่ะ


การคุยเล่น (Small talk) นั้น ถือเป็นมารยาทอย่างหนึ่งในการสนทนาในภาษาอังกฤษ แต่ทั้งนี้ต้องหมั่นสังเกตคู่สนทนาด้วยว่า อีกฝ่ายติดธุระอยู่หรือไม่ และทุกครั้งที่จะเริ่มบทสนทนาชวนคุยนั้น  พึงระลึกไว้เสมอว่า จะต้องไม่ทำให้อีกฝ่ายรู้สึก ‘เด๋อ’ หรือ อัดอัดที่จะตอบค่ะ
