ดอยอินทนนท์ ถูกประกาศให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2515 ถือเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 6 ของประเทศไทย มีพื้นที่ 482.4 ตารางกิโลเมตร ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ในเขตอำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอแม่วาง และกิ่งอำเภอดอยหล่อ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ “ดอยอินทนนท์” แต่เดิมมีชื่อว่า “ดอยหลวง” หรือ “ดอยอ่างกา” ดอยหลวง มาจากขนาดของดอยที่ใหญ่มาก ชาวบ้านจึงเรียกกันว่า “ดอยหลวง” (หลวง เป็นภาษาเหนือ แปลว่า ใหญ่)
