ความหมายของประวัติศาสตร์

คำว่า “ ประวัติศาสตร์ ” เป็นศัพท์บัญญัติที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ รัชกาลที่ 6 ได้ทรงริเริ่มใช้ในความหมายของคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษว่า “ History ” อันมีรากศัพท์เดิมมาจากภาษากรีกว่า “ Histor ” มีความหมายเดิมแปลว่า “ ถัก ” หรือ “ ทอ ” ส่วนคำว่า “ Histor ” นี้ได้บัญญัติใช้เป็นครั้งแรกโดยนักปราชญ์ชาวกรีกผู้มีนามว่า เฮโรโดตุส ด้วยการใช้คำว่า “ Historiai ” เรียกเรื่องราวที่เขาสืบสวนค้นคว้ารวบรวมขึ้นมา ดังนั้นจึงทำให้เฮโรโดตุสได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็นบิดาแห่งประวัติศาสตร์ 

สำหรับการจำกัดความหมายของคำว่าประวัติศาสตร์ ได้มีผู้ให้ความหมายและคำจำกัดความอย่างมากมายทั้งนักปราชญ์ในซีกโลกตะวันตกและซีกโลกตะวันออก ซึ่งได้ยกมาเป็นตัวอย่างดังนี้ คือ

สำหรับนักวิชาการในประเทศไทย ต่างได้ให้คำจำกัดความสำหรับความหมายของคำว่าประวัติศาสตร์ไว้เช่นเดียวกันกับนักปราชญ์ชาวตะวันตก ดังเช่น ดร.นิธิ เอียวศรีวงศ์ และ ศ.อาคม พัฒิยะ กล่าวว่า “ ประวัติศาสตร์ คือ การศึกษาเพื่ออธิบายอดีตของสังคมมนุษย์ในมิติของเวลา หรือประวัติศาสตร์ คือ การศึกษาเพื่อเข้าใจอดีตของสังคมมนุษย์ในมิติของเวลา ”
จากการให้คำจำกัดความและการให้ความหมายของคำว่าประวัติศาสตร์ของนักวิชาการทั้งหลายข้างต้น ทำให้สามารถประมวลและสรุปความหมายของประวัติศาสตร์ได้ว่า “ประวัติศาสตร์ คือ การศึกษา การสืบเสาะ การค้นพบ ในส่วนของเรื่องราวในอดีตของมนุษย์ ในบริบทของสังคม เศรษฐกิจ การเมือง การปกครอง ศาสนา วัฒนธรรม ฯลฯ โดยเป็นเรื่องราวของคนในสังคมที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อคนจำนวนมาก ซึ่งเรื่องราวต่างๆนั้นเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นจริง ในช่วงเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งหรือมีมิติเวลา มีการศึกษาด้วยวิธีการอธิบาย เพื่อหาเหตุผลของเรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้นนั้น โดยใช้หลักฐานที่เกิดขึ้นในช่วงสมัยหรือช่วงเวลานั้นๆประกอบในการศึกษา ”
 องค์ประกอบของคำว่า “ ประวัติศาสตร์ ”
