AEC เป็นการพัฒนามาจากการเป็นสมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ประชาคมอาเซียนที่จะถือกำเนิดในปี 2558 .การรวมตัวกันของประเทศสมาชิกในกลุ่มอาเซียนทั้งในด้านการเมือง เศรษฐกิจ และสังคมวัฒนธรรม ย่อมเป็นประโยชน์ ต่อการพัฒนาประเทศ ซึ่งประเทศไทยเองก็ได้รับประโยชน์อย่างมากจากการร่วมกลุ่มอาเซียน กว่า 41 ปีที่ผ่านมานับตั้งแต่การก่อตั้งองค์กร ผลงานของอาเซียนถือได้ว่าประสบความสำเร็จจนเป็นที่ยอมรับจากหลายฝ่ายในหลายด้านสามารถสรุปได้ดังนี้
