ต่อมา ในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2535 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว พระราชทานนาม “สถาบันราชภัฏ” แทนชื่อ "วิทยาลัยครู" มีผลให้ "วิทยาลัยครูกาญจนบุรี" เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น "สถาบันราชภัฏกาญจนบุรี" สังกัดสำนักงานสภาสถาบันราชภัฏ กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ
และเมื่อวันที่ 9 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2547 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงลงพระปรมาภิไภยในร่างพระราชบัญญัติ มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏ พ.ศ. 2547 มีผลให้สถาบันราชภัฏกาญจนบุรีเปลี่ยนสภาพเป็น "มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏกาญจนบุรี" ตั้งแต่วันที่ 15 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2547
