ประวัติ
หมู่เกาะพีพี หรือ Phi Phi ในภาษาอังกฤษมีชื่อมาจาก Palau Bee Aw Bee เป็นภาษามาลายู ซึ่ง Palau แปลว่าเกาะ ส่วน Bee Aw Bee เป็นชื่อของพันธุ์ไม้ชนิดหนึ่งซึ่งใช้สำหรับทำเชื้อเพลิงของชาวเลที่อาศัยอยู่บนเกาะนี้ ในเวลาต่อมาคำว่า Bee Bee ได้กลายมาเป็น Pee Pee หรือ Phi Phi ในที่สุด และเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2515 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลปัจจุบันได้เสร็จประพาสหมู่เกาะพีพีทางชลมารคและได้ทรงตั้งชื่อถ้ำไวกิ้งใหม่ให้เป็นภาษาไทยว่า “ถ้ำพญานาค” ตามรูปร่างก้อนหินภายในถ้ำที่มีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงพญานาค หมู่เกาะพีพีเป็นพื้นที่ส่วนหนึ่งของ ตำบลอ่าวนาง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดกระบี่ ตั้งอยู่ทางตอนใต้ของจังหวัดกระบี่หรือทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของจังหวัดภูเก็ต มีระยะทางจากจังหวัดกระบี่ 45 กิโลเมตร และจากจังหวัดภูเก็ต 48 กิโลเมตร ได้รับการกำหนดให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติหาดนพรัตน์ธารา-หมู่เกาะพีพีเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2526 ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2534 กระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์เทคโนโลยีและสิ่งแวดล้อมให้หมู่เกาะพีพีเป็นเขตควบคุมมลพิษ และเป็นพื้นที่คุ้มครองสิ่งแวดล้อม จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2539 และได้มีการออกประกาศดังกล่าวอีกในปี พ.ศ. 2540 เป็นต้นมา วันอาทิตย์ที่ 22 ธันวาคม 656
