คณะวิทยาศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย เป็นคณะวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งแรกของประเทศไทย เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ 1 ใน 4 คณะแรกตั้งของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยโดยในขณะนั้นใช้ชื่อว่า "คณะอักษรศาสตร์และวิทยาศาสตร์" ปัจจุบันประกอบด้วย 14 ภาควิชา แบ่งเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มวิทยาศาสตร์ชีวภาพ กลุ่มวิทยาศาสตร์กายภาพ กลุ่มเทคโนโลยี คณะวิทยาศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลั ตั้งอยู่ภายในพื้นที่จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยด้านตะวันออกของถนนพญาไท ด้านข้างสระน้ำ เป็นคณะที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 3 ของมหาวิทยาลัย[1]คณะวิทยาศาสตร์ เป็นหนึ่งในสี่คณะแรกเริ่มที่ก่อตั้งขึ้นพร้อมกับการสถาปนาจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ในชื่อ"คณะอักษรศาสตร์และวิทยาศาสตร์" มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการก่อตั้งเพื่อสอนวิชาพื้นฐานทางวิทยาศาสตร์ ให้กับนิสิตคณะแพทยศาสตร์ และคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ เพื่อนำไปประยุกต์ในการศึกษาขั้นสูงต่อไป นอกจากนี้ยังมีแผนกฝึกหัดครู (ต่อมาเป็นคณะครุศาสตร์) ที่เป็นแหล่งผลิตครูวิทยาศาสตร์ เพื่อสอนวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ในระดับมัธยมศึกษาอีกด้วย แต่เนื่องจากสมัยนั้น อาจารย์ที่สอนวิทยาศาสตร์ คือ แพทย์สามัญ ซึ่งไม่สามารถสอนวิทยาศาสตร์ได้ ทำให้นิสิตที่จบการศึกษามีความรู้ค่อนข้างจำกัด อีกทั้งการเรียนการสอนยังมีอุปสรรค เช่น นิสิตไม่มีความรู้ทางด้านภาษาอังกฤษ จึงไม่สามารถนำตำราต่างประเทศมาใช้ในการสอนได้
