หลังจากสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 หรือสงครามมหาเอเชียบูรภาสิ้นสุดลง มีทหารไทยจำนวนมากที่เสียสละในการสู้รบ รวมไปถึงได้ปลดปล่อยจากการเป็นทหาร เพราะสงครามสิ้นสุดลง จึงมีการกำหนดให้วันที่ 3 กุมภาพันธ ของทุกปี เป็นวันทหารผ่านศึก เพื่อเป็นการเชิดชูเกียรติแก่ทหารผ่านศึกที่เสียสละปฏิบัติหน้าที่เสมอมา
ปี พ.ศ. 2490 กระทรวงกลาโหมได้มีการจัดตั้งหน่วยงานเพื่อช่วยเหลือทหาร ที่กลับจากการปฏิบัติการรบ และช่วยเหลือครอบครัวทหารที่เสียชีวิตในการรบ จึงได้จัดตั้ง องค์การสงเคราะห์ทหารผ่านศึก ขึ้นโดยผ่านความเห็นชอบจากรัฐบาล แต่ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2510 ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนเป็น องค์การเพื่อการกุศลของรัฐ และเป็นนิติบุคคลตามกฎหมาย โดยได้รับเงินสนับสนุนจากกระทรวงกลาโหมและ หน่วยงานรัฐบาลเป็นครั้งคราว ภารกิจขององค์การทหารผ่านศึก
1. การสงเคราะห์ทางด้านสวัสดิการ เป็นการให้การสงเคราะห์เกี่ยวกับเรื่องทั่วๆ ไป ที่อยู่อาศัย การศึกษา ตลอดจนให้ความช่วยเหลือด้านอวัยวะเทียม
2. การสงเคราะห์ทางด้านอาชีพ โดยการฝึกอบรมและการฝึกอาชีพ ให้ความช่วยเหลือในทางด้านการทำงาน จัดหางานให้ทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ
3. การสงเคราะห์ด้านนิคมเกษตรกรรม จัดสรรที่ทำกินในด้านเกษตรกรรมให้ และให้ความช่วยเหลือทางด้านเครื่องมือและวิชาการ
4. การสงเคาระห์ด้านกองทุน โดยการจัดหาเงินทุนให้สมาชิกขององค์การทหารผ่านศึกได้กู้ยืมไปประกอบอาชีพ
5. การสงเคราะห์ด้านการรักษาพยาบาลให้แก่สมาชิก โดยไม่คิดมูลค่า
6. ให้มีการส่งเสริมสิทธิของทหารผ่านศึก โดยการขอสิทธิพิเศษในด้านต่างๆ ให้แก่ทหารผ่านศึก เช่น การขอลดค่าโดยสาร เป็นต้น
