รักบี้ ฟุตบอล มีต้นกำเนิดที่ไม่แน่ชัด แต่ที่จุดเริ่มต้นให้มีการเล่นตามรูปแบบที่เป็นอยู่ในปัจจุบันก็มาจาก โรงเรียนรักบี้ จากโรงเรียนนี้เกมได้แพร่หลายและมาไกลจนถึงเมืองไทย

          สำหรับรักบี้ในเมืองไทยนั้น เริ่มต้นด้วยชาวยุโรปโดยเฉพาะชาวอังกฤษที่เข้ามาทำการค้าหรือเข้ามาเป็นครู ในโรงเรียนของรัฐ ได้นำรักบี้เข้ามาเล่น โดยใช้สถานที่เล่นคือทุ่งพระสุเมรุ (ท้องสนามหลวงปัจจุบัน) ต่อมาปี 2444 พระพุทธเจ้าหลวงได้ให้ใช้ที่ดินว่างเปล่าที่ทุ่งสระปทุมวันเป็นที่เล่นกีฬา ของชาวต่างชาติที่อยู่ในเมืองไทย โดยใช้ชื่อว่า "ราชกรีฑาสโมสร" เกิดเป็นสโมสรกีฬาหลายชนิดมาถึงปี 2452 มีการเล่นรักบี้อย่างจริงจัง ทุกวันเสาร์โดยขั้นแรกเป็นการเล่นกันเองระหว่างต่างชาติล้วนๆหลังจากนั้นคน ไทยที่ไปศึกษายังประเทศอังกฤษและเล่นรักบี้ที่นั่นเมื่อกลับมาเมืองไทยได้ เข้าร่วมเล่นเรื่อยมา ครั้นต่อมาเมื่อมีจำนวนคนไทยและที่ไม่ใช่คนอังกฤษเล่นมากขึ้น ได้รวมตัวกันตั้งเป็นทีมแข่งขัน กันเอง 3 ทีม คืออังกฤษ สก๊อตแลนด์ และทีมรวมจากหลาย ๆ ชาติรวมทั้งคนไทย ชิงถ้วย HAMSAIRS
 
          ต่อมาช่วงปี 2472 พระสุทัศน์ พงศ์พิสุทธิ์ (ม.ล.กิ่งสุทัศน์) นักเรียนเก่าอังกฤษซึ่งโปรดปรานเกมรักบี้มากที่สุด มารับราชการที่กรมไปรษณีย์โทรเลขก็รวบรวมข้าราชการหัดให้เล่นรักบี้ อาทิเช่น อาจารย์เจือ จักษุรักษ์ นายไชย เตชะเสน นายสกนธ์ ศาสตราภัย ฝึกหัดเล่นและได้ไปฝึกซ้อมที่โรงเรียนวชิราวุธวิทยาลัย โดยเกณฑ์เด็กนักเรียนรุ่นโตเข้าร่วมฝึกหัดเล่นด้วยกัน
     
          ปี 2481 เสด็จในกรมหมื่นพิทยาลงกรณ์ ได้มีการประชุมปรึกษาหารือจัดตั้งองค์กรขึ้นบริหารงานรักบี้คือตั้งเป็น "ยูเนี่ยน" โดยใช้ชื่อว่า SIAM RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION มีที่ทำการอยู่ที่ราชกรีฑาสโมสร ถนนสนาม ปทุมวัน พระนคร โดยมีกรมหมื่นพิทยาลงกรณ์ ทรงเป็นองค์นายก และเมื่อเดือนตุลาคม 2482 ได้จัดให้มีการแข่งขันชิงถ้วยระหว่างสมาชิกเป็นครั้งแรกเป็นการแข่งขันชิง ชนะเลิศ "ถ้วยบริติชเคาน์ซิล" (BRITISH COUNCIL CUP) ท่านเอกอัครราชทูตอังกฤษประจำประเทศไทยจัดหาถ้วยมามอบให้และได้ใช้เป็นถ้วย แข่งขันมาจนทุกวันนี้ทำให้กิจการของสมาคมรุดหน้ามีทีมสมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิก และส่งทีมเข้าร่วมแข่งขันหลายสถาบันรวมทั้งการแข่งขันประเภทนักเรียนพระรา ชวรวงศ์เธอกรมหมื่นพิทยาลงกรณ์หลวงพิบูลสงคราม อธิการบดีจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และหลวงประดิษฐ์มนูธรรม ได้มอบโล่รางวัลสำหรับการแข่งขันประเภทโรงเรียน ซึ่งทีมโรงเรียนเตรียมนายเรือเป็นทีมชนะ
     
          ต่อมาปี 2484 ได้เกิดสงครามมหาเอเซียบูรพา สมาคมรักบี้ต้องหยุดลงแต่ไม่ถึงกับล้มเลิกโดยเด็ดขาดหลังจากนั้นปี 2486 พระยาจินดารักษ์ อธิบดีกรมพลศึกษา ได้เข้าจัดแข่งขันรักบี้แทนสมาคมโดยจัดแข่งขันชิงโล่ชนะเลิศระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัย ด้วยความรักกีฬาเป็นชีวิตจิตใจ จึงมอบให้ นายโฉลก โกมารกุล ณ นคร เป็นผู้จัดทำโล่ รางวัลชนะเลิศประเภทมหาวิทยาลัยขึ้นมาใหม่อีกประเภทหนึ่งเรื่อยมาโดยใช้ชื่อ ว่า "โล่รางวัลประเภทอุดมศึกษา" ต่อมาปี 2494 กิจการของสมาคมในปีนี้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ดีนับเป็นเกียรติของสมาคม ที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงรับสมาคมเข้าอยู่ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์และเปลี่ยน ชื่อมาเป็น "สมาคมรักบี้ฟุตบอลแห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์" และเป็นกีฬาที่ได้รับความนิยมสูงสุด
