การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาสภาพปัญหาขยะมูลฝอยในปัจจุบันของตลาดสดเทศบาลท่าแร่ ตำบลท่าแร่ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสกลนคร ดำเนินการศึกษาโดยใช้แบบสอบถามกับผู้ค้าในตลาดสดเทศบาลท่าแร่และแบบสำรวจปริมาณขยะและองค์ประกอบของขยะมูลฝอ
ผลการศึกษา พบว่า ด้านการเกิดมูลฝอย ปริมาณมูลฝอยที่เกิดขึ้นเฉลี่ย 888.9 กิโลกรัม ด้านการจัดการมูลฝอย ณ แหล่งกำเนิด ส่วนใหญ่ไม่มีการคัดแยกขยะก่อนทิ้ง ด้านการเก็บรวบรวมจะทิ้งที่ถังขยะหน้าแผงลอยที่ผู้ค้าเตรียมไว้ แล้วรวบรวมไปทิ้ง ณ จุดที่ทางเทศบาลจัดไว้ ด้านการขนถ่ายมีรถบรรทุกแบบเปิดท้าย เก็บขน 1 เที่ยวต่อวัน ด้านกำจัดขยะกำจัดด้วยวิธีฝังกลบที่ศูนย์กำจัดขยะท่าแร่ ตลาดสดเทศบาล1 และตลาดสดเทศบาล 2 มีขยะประเภทเศษอาหาร มากที่สุด
