งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งเสนอการวิเคราะห์สัญนิยมในบทละครนอกพระราชนิพนธ์พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยอย่างเป็นระบบ การศึกษาสัญนิยมเป็นเรื่องที่คนส่วนใหญ่มองข้าม ทั้งๆที่สัญนิยมเป็นพื้นฐาน หรือเป็นขนบในการแต่งวรรณคดีต่างๆ ซึ่งจะช่วยสะท้อนให้ผู้ศึกษาได้เห็นถึงขนบประเพณีในสังคม ตลอดจนความคิดอ่านของบรรพชนไทยได้ดียิ่งขึ้น
งานวิจัยแบ่งออกเป็น ๕ บท บทนำกล่าวถึงวัตถุประสงค์ ขอบเขต และนิยามศัพท์เฉพาะ บทที่สองเป็นเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง บทที่สามเป็นวิธีดำเนินการวิจัย บทที่สี่เป็นผลการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล บทสุดท้ายเป็นการสรุปผล อภิปรายผล และข้อเสนอแนะ
ผู้วิจัยหวังว่า ผลจากการศึกษานี้จะช่วยให้เข้าใจสัญนิยมในการแต่งบทละครมากขึ้น โดยตระหนักถึงความเกี่ยวข้องระหว่างสัญนิยมกับสภาพสังคมอีกด้วย อนึ่ง คุณค่าของงานค้นคว้านี้คือเครื่องชี้ให้ประจักษ์ถึงความสำคัญของสัญนิยมในบทละคร ที่เป็นความรู้พื้นฐานที่จำเป็นต่อการศึกษาวรรณคดีไทย
งานวิจัยเรื่องนี้ยุติลงด้วยความหวังว่าจะทำให้ผู้อ่านสนใจและเกิดความคิดที่จะสนับสนุนหรือคัดค้านเพื่อประโยชน์ในเชิงวิชาการต่อไป
