EPC หรือ Electronic Product Code คือ การใช้งานเลขรหัสสินค้าอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ ร่วมกับเทคโนโลยี RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) ซึ่งปัจจุบันนับว่าเป็นเทคโนโลยีที่ทันสมัย มีประสิทธิภาพสูง และสามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้งานได้อย่างกว้างขวาง ทั้งในเชิงพาณิชย์ การบริการ และในอุตสาหกรรม อันเป็นเทคโนโลยีที่จะมาแทนระบบบาร์โค้ดที่ใช้อยู่ในปัจจุบัน



          EPC เป็นโครงสร้างใหม่ในการกำหนดเลขรหัสให้กับสินค้าที่ถูกพัฒนาขึ้นโดย Auto-ID Center เป็นเทคโนโลยีที่ทำให้การกำหนดเลขรหัสเพื่อบ่งชี้สินค้าแต่ละหน่วย แต่ละชิ้นมีการแตกต่าง ซึ่งมีประสิทธิภาพดีกว่าการใช้ระบบบาร์โค้ด อีกทั้ง EPC จะเป็นข้อมูลที่มีความจำเป็นและบรรจุอยู่ในหน่วยความจำของ RFID Tag  เพื่อประโยชน์ในการอ่านและบ่งชี้ข้อมูลต่างๆ เลขรหัส Barcode เป็นเลขบ่งชี้เพื่อกำกับสินค้าชนิดนั้นๆ โดยสินค้าประเภทเดียวกันที่มีลักษณะเหมือนกันทุกประการก็จะมีเลขรหัสเดียวกันทั้งหมด ถึงแม้จะเป็นสินค้าที่มีวันผลิตและวันหมดอายุต่างกัน



          ระบบ EPC จะมีลักษณะการนำไปใช้งานได้มากกว่าระบบบาร์โค้ด เพราะ EPC มีโครงสร้างเลขรหัสที่มีจำนวนตัวเลขมากกว่าจึงสามารถนำไปกำหนดให้กับสินค้าทุกชิ้นมีเลขรหัสที่ต่างกันทั้งหมดได้ ถึงแม้จะเป็นสินค้าที่เหมือนกันแต่คนละชิ้นก็จะมีเลขรหัสต่างกัน ทำให้สินค้าที่มีวันผลิตและวันหมดอายุต่างกันมีเลขรหัสต่างกัน ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์ในการบริการจัดการสินค้าให้มีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น สิ่งที่เห็นได้ชัดเจนคือ ความสะดวก-รวดเร็วในการบ่งชี้สินค้า ,ความสามารถในการอ่านข้อมูลครั้งละมากๆ , มีระยะทางและรัศมีในการบ่งชี้สินค้าที่ไกลกว่าการสแกนบาร์โค้ดแบบเดิม  และการบันทึกข้อมูล EPC ใน RFID Tag ช่วยเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการบ่งชี้ข้อมูลของสินค้าและการบริหารจัดการ Supply Chain ได้ดียิ่งขึ้น
