ประวัติความเป็นมา

โรงเรียนสบเมยวิทยาคม เริ่มก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤษภาคม 2530 ตามนโยบายของกรมสามัญศึกษาในขณะนั้น ที่กำหนดให้มีการขยายจัดการศึกษาในโรงเรียนมัธยมศึกษาทุกอำเภอ โดยอาศัยอาคารเรียนโรงเรียนบ้านแม่เกาะ มีนายเกษม พันธุรัตน์ ผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียนแม่สะเรียง “บริพัตรศึกษา” เป็นผู้ดูแลในฐานะคณะกรรมการสามัญศึกษาประจำจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน มีนักเรียนจำนวน 63 คน เป็นนักเรียนชายจำนวน 29 คน นักเรียนหญิงจำนวน 34 คน ต่อมาได้ย้ายมาทำการสอนในที่ตั้งปัจจุบัน เมื่อวันที่ 11 มิถุนายน 2530 โดยมีนายสุเทพ นุชทรวง เป็น ผู้บริหารคนแรก เปิดทำการสอนในระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 ถึงชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 จนกระทั่งปีการศึกษา 2538 ได้เปิดสอนในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายจนถึงปัจจุบัน


ปัจจุบันโรงเรียนสบเมยวิทยาคม ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ 78/1 หมู่ 3 ถนนแม่สะเรียง – แม่สอด ตำบลแม่คะตวน อำเภอสบเมย จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศใต้ของอำเภอแม่สะเรียง และอยู่ห่างจากที่ว่าการอำเภอสบเมยประมาณ 5 กิโลเมตร บนเนื้อที่กว่า 45 ไร่ ทิศเหนือและทิศตะวันตกติดกับแม่น้ำยวมและเขตป่าสงวนแห่งชาติ ทิศตะวันออก ติดกับทางหลวงแผ่นดินหมายเลข 105 แม่สะเรียง – แม่สอด
