ขณะทรงพระเยาว์
สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ เป็นพระธิดาพระองค์ใหญ่ของหม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคล กิติยากร (ภายหลังเป็น พระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้านักขัตรมงคล กรมหมื่นจันทบุรีสุรนาถ) ประสูติแต่หม่อมหลวงบัว กิติยากร (สกุลเดิม: สนิทวงศ์) เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 12 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2475 ณ บ้านของพลเอก เจ้าพระยาวงษานุประพัทธ (หม่อมราชวงศ์สท้าน สนิทวงศ์) บ้านเลขที่ 1808 ถนนพระรามที่ 6 ตำบลวังใหม่ อำเภอปทุมวัน จังหวัดพระนครอันเป็นบ้านของพระอัยกาฝ่ายพระมารดา มีพระพี่น้องคือ หม่อมราชวงศ์กัลยาณกิติ์, หม่อมราชวงศ์อดุลกิติ์ และหม่อมราชวงศ์บุษบา กิติยากร
