สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม 2510 โดยมีสมาชิก 10 ประเทศ ได้แก่ อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ เวียดนาม ลาว กัมพูชา เมียนมาร์และไทย อาเซียนก่อตั้งขึ้นเพื่อส่งเสริมความ ร่วมมือทางด้านการเมือง เศรษฐกิจและสังคม ส่งเสริมสันติภาพและความมั่นคงของภูมิภาคและ ส่งเสริมความร่วมมือระหว่างอาเซียนกับต่างประเทศและองค์กรระหว่างประเทศ สัญลักษณ์ของอาเซียน คือ รูปรวงข้าวสีเหลืองบนพื้นสีแดงล้อมรอบด้วยวงกลมสีขาวและสีน้ำเงิน รวงข้าว 10 ต้น หมายถึง ประเทศสมาชิก 10 ประเทศ สีเหลืองหมายถึงความเจริญรุ่งเรือง สีแดงหมายถึง ความกล้าหาญและการมีพลวัต สีขาวหมายถึงความบริสุทธิ์ และสีน้ำเงินหมายถึงสันติภาพและความมั่นคง
