รายการเริ่มต้นโดยการรับสมัครผู้เข้าแข่งจากทั่วประเทศไทย โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 4 ช่วงในแต่ละภาค ได้แก่ ภาคกลาง ภาคอีสาน ภาคเหนือ และภาคใต้ โดยการคัดเลือก กรรมการสามคน คือ เพชร มาร์, สุธีศักดิ์ ภักดีเทวา และอรนภา กฤษฎี จะเป็นผู้วิจารณ์และตัดสิน ผู้ผ่านการคัดเลือกจากแต่ละภาคเข้าร่วมแข่งขันร้องเพลง และแข่งขันกันอีกรอบเพื่อหาตัวแทน 8 คน มาแข่งในรอบสุดท้าย จนได้ผู้ชนะเลิศ

รอบสุดท้ายการแข่งขันจะเป็นการประกวดร้องเพลงตามรูปแบบเพลงที่กำหนด หลังสิ้นสุดการร้อง กรรมการจะวิจารณ์การร้อง รวมถึงการแสดงที่ผ่านมา เมื่อจบรายการจะมีการให้คะแนนจากทาง 100 เสียงในห้องส่ง โดยนับเป็นคะแนน 10% ของคะแนนทั้งหมด และให้ผู้ชมทางบ้านทั้งประเทศส่งคะแนนเข้ามาผ่านทางเอสเอ็มเอสเพื่อโหวต โดยนับเป็นคะแนนอีก 90% ผู้ที่ได้คะแนนน้อยที่สุดในแต่ละสัปดาห์จะถูกคัดออก จนได้ผู้ชนะเลิศ และรางวัลสำหรับผู้ชนะเลิศคือ การเซ็นสัญญาออกเทปเป็นศิลปินในเครือจีเอ็มเอ็ม แกรมมี่
