อุทยานแห่งชาติปางสีดา มีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมท้องที่อำเภอตาพระยา อำเภอวัฒนานคร อำเภอเมืองจังหวัดสระแก้ว และอำเภอนาดี จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี มีสภาพป่าอุดมสมบูรณ์ประกอบด้วยทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่สำคัญและมีค่า มีสภาพธรรมชาติและเอกลักษณ์ทางธรรมชาติที่สวยงามหลายแห่ง เช่น น้ำตกปางสีดา น้ำตกผาตะเคียน น้ำตกแควมะค่า จุดชมวิว โขดหินตามลำน้ำที่มีลักษณะแปลกๆ มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 527,500 ไร่ หรือ 844 ตารางกิโลเมตร

ความเป็นมาของการจัดตั้งอุทยานแห่งชาติ เดิมบริเวณน้ำตกปางสีดา เป็นหน่วยงานหนึ่งในโครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่ราบเชิงเขา จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี ซึ่งเป็นโครงการในพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ในการที่จะจัดบริเวณน้ำตกปางสีดา ให้เป็นสถานที่สำหรับพักผ่อนของประชาชน อีกทั้งยังเป็นการรักษาพื้นที่ต้นน้ำลำธารและสภาพป่าธรรมชาติ ดังนั้น กรมป่าไม้จึงได้จัดตั้งให้เป็นวนอุทยานแห่งชาติ ชื่อว่า วนอุทยานปางสีดา เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2521 ต่อมา กองอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ ได้ทำรายงานสำรวจเบื้องต้น กำหนดให้ป่าน้ำตกปางสีดาและพื้นที่ใกล้เคียงเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ โดยได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดบริเวณที่ดิน ป่าแก่งดินสอ ป่าแก่งใหญ่ ป่าเขาสะโตน และป่าท่ากระบาก ในท้องที่ ต.แก่งดินสอ อ.นาดี ต.บ้านแก้ง ต.ท่าแยก ต.โคกปี่ฆ้อง อ.สระแก้ว ต.หนองน้ำใส ต.ช่องกุ่ม ต.แซร์ออ อ.วัฒนานคร จังหวัดปราจีนบุรีให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติปางสีดา ซึ่งประกาศไว้ในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 99 ตอนที่ 24 ลงวันที่ 22 กุมภาพันธ์ 2525 เป็นอุทยาน ฯ แห่งที่ 41 ของประเทศไทย

ปัจจุบันอุทยานแห่งชาติปางสีดา ตั้งอยู่ในพื้นที่ อ.เมือง อ.วัฒนานคร อ.ตาพระยา จ.สระแก้ว และ อ.นาดี จังหวัดปราจีนบุรี ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศใต้ของเทือกเขาพนมดงรัก คลอบคลุมพื้นที่ 527,500 ไร่ หรือประมาณ 844 ตารางกิโลเมตร มีสภาพป่าอุดมสมบูรณ์ ประกอบไปด้วยทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่สำคัญและมีค่า เช่น ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า และทิวทัศน์ที่สวยงาม สภาพภูมิประเทศส่วนใหญ่เป็นภูเขาสูงสลับซับซ้อน มีพืชพรรณไม้หลายชนิด ประกอบไปด้วย ป่าดิบชื้น ป่าดิบแล้ง ป่าดิบเขา ป่าผสมผลัดใบ ป่าเต็งรัง และป่าทุ่งหญ้า เหมาะสมที่จะรักษาไว้เพื่อการศึกษาวิจัยในด้านป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า ด้านการท่องเที่ยว จุดเด่นที่น่าสนใจ ได้แก่ น้ำตกปางสีดา น้ำตกผาตะเคียน กลุ่มน้ำตกแควมะค่า กลุ่มน้ำตกถ้ำค้างคาว ภูเขาเจดีย์ ฟอสซิลไดโนเสาร์ แหล่งดูนกน้ำอ่างเก็บน้ำพระปรง แหล่งดูผีเสื้อ จนได้รับการยอมรับว่าเป็นแหล่งดูผีเสื้อแห่งภาคตะวันออก การเดินทางไปยังอุทยานแห่งชาติปางสีดา จากสถานีขนส่ง จังหวัดสระแก้ว ถึงที่ทำการอุทยาน ฯ ระยะทางประมาณ 27 กม. ปัจจุบันได้รวมผืนป่า 5 ผืนป่า ประกอบไปด้วย อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่ ปางสีดา ทับลาน ตาพระยา และเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าดงใหญ่ เนื้อที่ประมาณ 3.8 ล้านไร่ เรียกว่า “ผืนป่าดงพญาเย็น-เขาใหญ่” และได้ประกาศเป็น “มรดกโลกทางธรรมชาติ แห่งที่ 2 ของประเทศไทย” เมื่อวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม 2548
